What began as a train station in the early 1920s, connecting Detroit to Pontiac, later evolved into one of Birmingham’s most iconic dining destinations. After decades of service and a long-standing run as the beloved Big Rock Chophouse, the building closed its doors in 2021, making way for a new chapter.
With the help of BJC, the vision of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants was brought to life. The nearly 100-year-old former train station was carefully restored and reimagined, honoring its history while transforming it into what is now Big Rock Italian Chophouse.
BJC played a critical role in the project, leading the framing, and construction of the new cigar lounge addition. SIP panels and cold-formed metal framing were utilized throughout the additions and porch structures to meet modern performance standards while respecting the original architecture.
The interior features walnut paneling, custom stone countertops, and extensive architectural steel. Each element fabricated specifically for this project. Every detail was thoughtfully executed to restore this historic building and former restaurant, returning it to its rightful place as a Birmingham landmark.
